NSO Mentor

Keuka College - Keuka Park, NY

Work collaboratively with Student Affairs and Keuka College faculty to assist new students with their college transition. Serve as role-models/ambassadors (student paraprofessional staff members) while providing opportunities for students to become acclimated to their new environment. This is a variable hourly position running six (6) weeks for fall semester (August through October), three (3) weeks for spring semester (if selected, February through March) along with a few hours throughout each semester with Experiential Learning (Co-Curricular).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Welcome new students and their parents to the campus and acquainting them with its facilities and resources.
  • Assist new students with their transition to Keuka College.
  • Work cooperatively with one or more assigned academic advisers in continued support of advising efforts.
  • Assist new students in developing positive relations with faculty, administration/staff, and peers.
  • Help create an environment, which provides sufficient information to enable new students to make reasoned and well informed choices.
  • Help explain and discuss information concerning academic policies, procedures, requirements, and programs.
  • Collaborate with other campus offices/staff to encourage new students to participate and engage in co-curricular activities.
  • Make contact with mentees throughout the academic year and complete any required paperwork/documentation.
  • Promote an awareness of and encourage involvement in extracurricular activities, provide guidance to new students regarding campus involvement, and assist students with identification of skills learned through their involvement.
  • Provide information about and exposure to available institutional services.
  • Make appropriate referrals to available institutional services for new students, as needed.
  • Create an environment that minimizes anxiety, promotes positive attitudes, and stimulates an excitement for learning.
  • Provide opportunities for new students to discuss expectations and perceptions of the campus with current students.
  • Plan social and get-acquainted activities for new students during the first six weeks of the fall semester.
  • Attend all in-person and/or online orientation/training sessions required for this position.
  • Assist with the facilitation of scheduled NSO sessions.
  • Assist with the facilitation of Transition Week.
  • Work with mentee group to facilitate transition. In addition to meeting with mentees during scheduled sessions, making sure mentees attend designated programs.
  • Meet with mentees and make contact with their adviser(s) at least once a week during the first six weeks of the fall semester, as well as with supervisors, as needed.
  • Abide by the Keuka College Student Code of Conduct including, but not limited to, the College Policy on Alcohol Use.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be mature, responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, and reliable
  • Must display a positive attitude
  • Required minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Required to be in good judicial standing
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and departments effectively and collaboratively
  • Ability to model ethical behavior and engender the respect of parents, students, faculty, administration, and staff are vital

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
  • Evening and weekend hours required
